CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY FOR CHILDREN
CranioSacral Therapy and its uses for Children
No journey in life is as complex as the one that brings us into it. Childbirth can be a challenge for mothers, yet it barely compares to the challenge for a baby. On this journey there are numerous possible factors that can cause shock and potential long term effects for a child.
Thankfully, there’s a way to soothe your baby that offers more than comfort and relief. It’s a gentle form of touch called CranioSacral Therapy and it can help forge a lifetime of good health.
CranioSacral Therapy is a light touch manual therapy that addresses restrictions in the craniosacral system – the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Since this system directly impacts on the central nervous system, imbalances and tensions can cause any number of sensory, motor or neurological disabilities. CranioSacral Therapy helps correct restrictions so the body can more easily and naturally release the effects of stress.
Research strongly suggests that the birth process can be responsible for many brain and central nervous system dysfunctions. CranioSacral Therapy carried out early in life could potentially reduce the impact of a wide variety of difficulties, many of which might not be apparent until your child is in school. When properly applied, CranioSacral Therapy is essentially risk-free and may bring great benefits, for carers and children alike.
What conditions can CranioSacral Therapy address?
CST can assist children with a wide range of challenges. Many parents report that newborns and young children are more settled and relaxed after sessions. In fact, CST is sometimes thought of as a treatment especially for babies. It can also be helpful for new mums to get on the table too!
Since CST is not prescriptive in its approach, we work by listening to and following what it feels the body tissues need to do, whatever condition a child may be experiencing. It is not a replacement for appropriate medical care and if there are any concerns we recommend consulting our medical practitioner.
What can I expect from a session?
Working with children can bring a degree of unpredicatability! My prime intention is for the child to be comfortable with receiving a treatment. It can sometimes take a first session or two for your child to acclimatise before hands on treatment can start.
CST is performed fully clothed. The craniosacral rhythm is monitored and by carefully listening I can evaluate and work on areas of restriction by using delicate and precise movements. While many techniques are carried out from the cranium or sacrum – head and lower back – I may also work on other parts of the body too.
Children generally respond very quickly to the work as their systems still retain a degree of flexibility. Sessions may therefore last between 15 minutes and an hour depending on the age of the child, their co-operation and the needs of their body.
The result? A craniosacral system and central nervous system that houses fewer restrictions and a body that is able to grow more fully into its potential. No matter how old your child is, it’s never too late to benefit from this gentle therapy.
